The downtown farmers market has a new home and with it, the opportunity to further connect people with the neighbourhood and locally produced food.
The market is moving to 1310 – 3rd Avenue (formerly the BMO Bank of Montreal and more recently a UNBC downtown campus) and will provide patrons opportunities to stroll and browse in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, both indoors and out. Long accepted as a great place to meet up with friends and access fresh fruits, vegetables and other locally-made items, the location is also conducive to linking vendors with other businesses and organizations downtown.
The building is also expected to be the future home of an arts-based community centre operated by the Community Arts Council. The CAC is currently surveying its members and other organizations – including the Farmers Market – to determine the needs and opportunities related to their new facility downtown. It’s hoped that the development will serve as the nucleus of a market and culture district in the downtown.
The market is moving from its current location on 6th Avenue to accommodate a new underground parkade and downtown housing project. It will continue as a four-season venue with increased offerings spring through fall.
